How I Got Back In Shape with YouTube Videos

Confession time.  Over the past few months, I’ve been really bad about exercising lately.  And while that is bad, it’s especially bad since what I do for a living is teach and motivate people to practice healthy work habits, eat well, stress less,  and you guessed it……exercise more!

My excuse?  Not enough time.  And right now, the schedule is tight and in the interest of practicing what I preach and wanting to up my exercise (and energy) game, I decided to give YouTube a whirl and tried something new.

The rules were simple:

  1. I had to Workout to a YouTube Video for 30 days.
  2. The video could be any exercise genre, but had to be 15 minutes.
  3. I had to work out in the morning, before the day got away from me.

Here’s what happend!

Week 1:

You know how when you are in a good exercise groove, you can’t imagine not exercising and conversely when you are out of shape, the idea of exercising seems utterly impossible?  Yeah….so that’s where I started from.  This week was the “UGGHHH” phase.  So, I started with short easy videos, like 7 Minutes to Lose weight Fast, Burn Fat and Tone Your Body    and  Sugar Pops’ 10-Minute No-Equipment Home Workout, Full Body Exercise  which did the trick to ease back into an exercise routine.

Week 2:

I definitely noticed more energy, noticed I was sitting and standing up straighter.   My mood improved and I started sleeping better.   I upped the routine to include videos like 15 minute Cardio and Total Body Bootcampand and 20 Minute Full Body Burn.  I learned that videos with a count down clock were much better than ones without and that the instructor makes all the difference.

Week 3 & 4:

Half way through I found myself looking forward to my morning work outs.  My pants felt a tiny bit looser and I started to up my game and add in walks and slow jogs into the mix.  I could feel myself getting stronger.  I started trying different types of workouts ranging from Kickboxing to Pilates to Yoga.

The kicker was during my annual physical last week where I lost a few pounds and my doctor asked if I had been exercising.  When I said yes and asked him why he asked, he told me he could hear it in my heart beat.  (Who knew!?!?!).

So, I feel ready to up my game again in the upcoming month and work in yoga and cardio at the gym and this time, make the time to exercise.

Because, as the saying goes.  If not now, when?

I hope you will be inspired to join me.  Let me know in the comments what you will be doing for exercise this month!
