With July 4th around the corner, grocery baskets are being filled up with chips, dips, steaks, beer, bacon burger ingredients, ice-cream, BBQ sauce, sweets, treats and general diet splurge delights. And as most of you know, I am a green juicing hard core vegan, while Andrew loves a great steak and BBQ Chicken and anything with bacon and sausages on it!
Whatever diet you follow: meat eating, plant based, pescetarian, veg head or something in between, here are some tips and tricks to keep your July 4th menu tasty but healthy or at least healthier!
Main Dishes: If you want to stick with a BBQ theme and want to serve up some steak, splurge and make sure your meats are organic, hormone and anti-biotic free and grass fed. They are not only healthier for you, but in most cases, tastier too! Alternatives Include:
- Turkey Burgers
- Veggie Burgers
- Shish-kabobs (Veggies, Tofu, Chicken or Shrimp)
- Grilled Veggies
Side Dishes & Snacks: The options for side dishes are endless, but some favorites that are on the healthy side include:
- Coleslaw
- Kale Salad
- Spinach Salad
- Quinoa Salad
- Pasta Salad
- Tomato & Basil
- Corn on the Cob
- Chips & Guacamole, Hummus or Salsa
- Raw Veggies and Dip
Desserts: We all know that desserts are the best part of July 4th, but here are some ways to satisfy your sweet cravings without going bonkers!
Beverages: Some great alternatives to sugary nutrient-less drinks include:
- Naturally Brewed Ice Tea
- Fresh Squeezed Lemonade
- Seltzer (add in lemon or lime) and Spritzers
